The Nokia Blog: Top 5 Reasons Why Nokia N85 Is Better Than Nokia N96

  • Adonis · 1 year ago
N85 wins easy. The N96 is one to forget about .
  • Viipottaja · 1 year ago
Well, true (and I would go with N85 _personally_) butthe N96 holds the upper hand in two specs: 16GB internal memory (some may value that high) and digi TV tuner (some may value that high). To me its all about Nokia giving consumers many choises to pick from. But I do agree N96 is likely remain a niche "flagshippish" product with relatively low sales. Then again, consumers are tricky bastards to predict.

Once the Nokia 8MP cam phone comes out, the picture changes yet again.
  • Adonis · 1 year ago
Comparing how slow the N95 8GB is with it's internal memory solution I'd skip it, purely on the basis you can get a 16GB card now. DVB-H tuner? Not in Europe, using a different band.

Don't forget rumours of the N96 not having a graphic chip either. Having choices is one thing, but having choice of an N85 or N96, I'd got with the N85 everyday.

    #5.5 Tri-band WCDMA!
  • Andy Burgin · 1 year ago
The N85 will really outclass the N96 the buiid of the N85 looks alot more solid than the N96,the pictures an videos i saw on www.mobileburn.com of the N85 looks very good indeed its like the E65 slide built slide an the N85 looks alot slimmer as well,What the hell is going on at Nokia its took them over 6 months to get the N96 ready to be released then release the N85 thats alot better, the N96 will be alot of wasted time an money from Nokia,an now got to release a 8 mega-pixel camera mobile to stop the Samsung i8510 out doing there sales on the N96,N85 an N79
  • Eric · 1 year ago
Don't forget the 2.8" vs 2.6" screen. Just look at how much better the N95-4 screen is compared to the N95-3.
  • Mark Guim · 1 year ago
@eric size of the screen is different, but what I'm interested to find out is how much better the quality of the of the display on the N85 and if it's noticeable.
  • Zylam Marex · 1 year ago
Man Mark thats the post people needed, i'm so eagly awaiting the N96 i just can't wait any longer, i've seen like a dozen hands on videos and pretty much imagined it in my hands! i love the new Nseries look, its so slick and i cound't wait any longer so i went out and bought the N78 just 3 days ago it had such a major price drop that i could't resist and i'm loving it! but i've still saved money for the N96, my plan was to enjoy the N78 mid level phone until the N96 was ready to shine, but today nokia realease the N85!! what is this man, some kind of a joke? its better than the N96 but!! i'm still going for the N96 :)! i think it looks better, i saw the hands on preview on Pascos and its so slick, so i'm still gonna go for the N96 i don care of smasnung have 8mp i'm still in love with the N96, after all its a N96 baby!!!!! oh yea and the N78's really slick too can't stop looking at it!! Nokia's the coolest man

  • ashu · 1 year ago
my vote to n 82!! Come on guys, you gotta love the one that is handling all your current needs more than what is on tube or paper!
However, going by the specifications, of course i feel n 85 has definitely got more relevant features than n 96 and is more user friendly. My 'second' vote to n 85.
  • Marco · 1 year ago
Congratulations for this post!!... and thks a lot for sending it via your news letter right to my mail.

I was thinking on a N96 for this winter, but this post is really changing my mind.
  • Greg · 1 year ago
    Hi Mark,

Thanks for your blog. Funny to read your post as I think the same. I wrote about it yesturday on my blog.

Here is the link translated in English by Google.
  • Tijs · 1 year ago
i think n85 beats n96 but those 0.2 inches are noticeable i wish they'd include on the n85 :/ , dont care about the 16 gb on the n96 since im a microsdhc pro guy , too bad the n85 doesnt include a xenon flash thats the main reason i won't get it besides the screen size
  • johan · 1 year ago
    xenon flash ?
I suspect that's overrated in terms of photographic advantage.
With a LED photo-light you have a possible BUILT IN FLASHLIGHT, which in my book is really usable !
    - - - -
OLED display - haven't seen one yet.
What RESOLUTION does it feature ?
    - Size matters, but resolution matters just as much.
  • Anup · 1 year ago
@johan cmon...a xenon does make a difference...especially for night shots! I have a N95 8GB and N82 and there is a sizeable difference between a single LED and xenon (and i am not talking about total darkness) and of course the xenon is faster when capturing images...ad regarding the flashlight angle, use it to much that way and chances are the LED will conk off.

the only point where i see the LED better than the xenon is video! LED allows some light in low light videos where the xenon will work.
  • Anup · 1 year ago
You want to see the difference between a dual LEd and xenon, check out this link at the Symbian-Guru blog article

If it's going to look like every other Windows Mobile phone - all trying to look like an iPhone - then it should at least have a touch screen...

And the lack of left-hand support while in landscape mode is just plain rude.

n96 is the best nseries phone ever made...
nokia 3310 is better than the n85.

    untill they make 8 megapixels
    divx player
    32+ GB
    3" screen
    windows
    etc.........................
    nothing beats the N96
  • Adonis · 1 year ago
N96 fanboy in the house! LOL!
  • ARJWright · 1 year ago
I agree that teh N85 has a lot of positive marks for it that the N96 doesn't. But we are also comapairing a device that has already had a first announcement and is on sale in one respect, versus another that's announced but not in hand yet. This speaks to development lifecycles and lessons on the N96 translated to the N85 and later models. It happens.

Personally, if DVB was something worthwhile in the US, I'd say the N96 was slightly better as that would literally mean mobile TiVo. The N85 can stream Flash, but mobile TiVo would really be something to play with.
  • Al Pavangkanan · 1 year ago
    AREJWright,

You could buy just a Slingbox. With the S60 Slingbox player and 3G, you could have Tivo everywhere.
  • laughing john · 1 year ago
Well I had been looking forward to the N96, I'm currently using an N95 8GB which I'm very happy with. My main gripe would be the size of the thing.

However the main selling point of the N96 for me was the TV tuner.Uf that doesn't work with freeview in the UK then it seems a bit pointless to sell it here.

I guess it'll be the N85 for me too unless they put a DVB-T tuner in for us.
  • Davesmith · 1 year ago
    Reason 6: SIZE!
The new N85 is noticeably thinner, which means less of a bulge in the pocket. This is a major factor when deciding o nwhich phone to get, esp. for the non-techie.
  • path · 1 year ago
i'll hold on till nokia, decide that n95 users deserve more respect.
  • path · 1 year ago
n96 is the best nseries phone ever made…

    untill they make 8 megapixels
    divx player
    32+ GB
    3″ screen

    etc…………………….

now that's i call showing love and respect.
    nothing beats the N96
  • Yusuri · 1 year ago
8 Megapixels? should we go "wow" on that? My old N73 which is 3.2mp really does a good job at taking pictures. The average quality pics is only at 3-5 megapixels only. Our human eye is at that average quality. So why is it we need an 8mp?
Screen is large for the N96, which consumes a lot of battery. 32GB can cause your machine to slow down.
N85 may not have all the specs like N96 have. But as a normal user like us, our average use during the whole day is the N85. We don't need the extra N96 specs/app because most of us doesnt even use it or rarely use it.
N85, I'm getting it. Cheap for cheap thrills.
  • Adonis · 1 year ago
@Laughing John DVB-H has been chosen by EU recently to be the standard for mobile TV, but who is transmitting signals is another question. Also how much would you be able to watch before the battery runs flat?
  • Maciek · 1 year ago
I for one won't be picking up any of those phones and I am Nokia fanboy. The reason is plain and simple...Nokia fu..ed over the US again. They should realize that there's a new 3G network on the block (T-Mobile) which day by day is popping up in more cities and I think Nokia lost a lot of sales. T-Mobile doesn't have any decent phones yet. Android is around the block but who knows how it will turn out to be. Had Nokia included WCDMA 1700 in N85 or N96 - they would have more sales then expected. T-Mobile subscribers are anticipating better phones and since T-Mobile is not providing them yet - this would be a good step to pick one up from Nokia and have it in hand when 3G officialy launches on October 1st. This was a stupid move on Nokia's side.
  • Mark Guim · 1 year ago
Hey @Maciek! It's been a while since we met back in Barcelona!

I agree picking up the frequency for T-Mo would have been a great idea, but it also would have been a great idea to add xenon flash, HD video, waterproof, etc.
  • Carlee · 1 year ago
    hello to all!!
i have the big cuestion if the 9.2 applications will work in this new feature pack 9.3?
i know that a big amount of them wont work, but approx what percent you guys think?
  • greg003 · 1 year ago
    - i prefer N85 because its cheaper.
    - i'm not buying any 8MP phone because it a waste of money. 8MP will just add to the price. I don't even used often my N82's 5MP even if I'm a photo enthusiast because its not part of my regular and normal routine.
    - i'll buy N96 if i'm rich but never be fooled by specs that i dont need like 8MP
    - i'll never ever buy Samsung products because of durability issues. putting low grade parts on their mobile device is a wicked business that Samsung have mastered.
  • mobiledan · 1 year ago
When're you getting them in the store Mark? What's the pricing looking like?
  • Mark Guim · 1 year ago
Not sure when I'll be getting them. I'll find out as we get closer to october
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
The N82 has one feature that was removed on the N85--Xenon flash.

I wonder if they fixed the N82 problem of overcompression (or actually, it's the complete lack of ability to select compression levels) on the N85. The N82 took one of the best pictures for a camera phone (or maybe the very best), but it handicapped itself by overcompressing.
  • johan · 1 year ago
In VERY serious tests the N82 took decent photos - no more. No less.
One thing is that it CONSTANTLY had white-balance problem, no matter what condition.
    - - -
Regarding the puny little xenon-flashes some cam-phones feature - of course placed in close proximity to the lens : and thus giving severe red-eye problems - I suspect they're overrated in terms of photographic advantage.
    - - -
Camera phones don't need more Megapixels, they need better lenses - make a wish for optic zoom ! - and better photographic tools for adjustment.
  • Clear · 1 year ago
I agree with you. The higher the MP is seriously not really needed. Better get a digital camera which has been built for taking picture purpose.
  • john mortimer · 1 year ago
    why the n85
    best thing is OLED
    and that it
it as a small screen (same size as the n95)
    i have used the n95 8gb and the n96
and the bigger screen makes up for the oled
also the n85 as crap phone internal memory
oh dear if the n95 is to go by
    so there

Will Feature pack 9.3 apps be compatible with 9.2? Because mostly I only see S60V2 or S60V3 in app description, no mention of 9.2 or 9.3??
  • hydra · 1 year ago
Symbian OS v9.3 is fully backwards compatible with previous versions in the v9 family...
  • goga · 1 year ago
i have n96,,bad batery back up,,,so n85 better choice and better look + in technology
  • Tom cruise · 1 year ago
After doing a research i also agree n85 is the choice
  • TaranQ · 1 year ago
Got latest update today on LG-KC910 and HTC Touch HD today. Was waiting for N85 to hit the stores, would N85 still be the better choice? HTC seems to rock as well.
  • george · 1 year ago
    Hi all,
Iv'e just been reading about n96 coming with bbci player. I wonder if the n85 will do this? W hat a cool feature. You can even save the programs you watch on your memory card forever (not possible oniphone).
    George.
  • al · 1 year ago
Also n85 has one great advantage which is phone book transfer which does not exist in N95 and N96. this phone book blue tooth feature allows to transfer cotacts to my car thru the blue tooth.
  • naresh · 1 year ago
nokia n96 has got a built in fm tuner , dont decieve people
  • TiMiX · 1 year ago
    Ya it has a tuner (receiver) but not a transmitter. You can send music to a FM radio with the N85.... sweet (o: Other reason im choosing the N85 over the N96. They should have called the N85 the N97 and stopped any confusion (o;
  • TaranQ · 1 year ago
Indeed, many go for the N96 because they believe it's superior to N95 (and N85)
  • TaranQ · 1 year ago
If I'm not mistaken the N85 has got built in FM tuner also.
  • johhny cash · 1 year ago
the n85 has fm transmitter for car or stereo!!
  • hydra · 1 year ago
that means we can play music from n85 to the radio's speaker?
  • n80 · 1 year ago
You forgot one major point as well, the N85 is Triband 3G phone, a first for nokia as well, which means 3G system works in Europe / North america and Asia.
  • BRETT · 1 year ago
I WENT TO THE CARPHONE WARHOUSE TODAY TO CHECK OUT THE N96 I AM SEROUSLY DISSAPOINTED WITH IT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HYPE OVER IT THEY HAD 25 IN STOCK 15MINS BEFORE CLOSING THEY SOLD 1 ALL DAY ????? I HAD A PLAY AROUND WITH ONE AND THE FEATURES WERE NOTHING SPECIAL AT ALL NOT TO MENTION THE PRICE TAG £50($90-100) A MONTH FOR 18 MONTHS ARE THEY TAKING THE PISS I CANT WAIT FOR SOME1 TO RELEASE A PHONE THATS QUALITY AND CHEAP !!!!
  • luqy · 1 year ago
ive been checking both phones thouroughly, and it looks to me as the n85 just seems, to be generaly faster, well animated, and smaller, not to mention better battery life, meaning, most likely the n85 will be a bigger hit and more popular, but my money would go to the n96, as i prefer a large screen, the kickstand, the internal memory, and external expansion, and the look and feel of it. but or most people n85 wins, as smaller, and faster is always and will always be an upside. well thats my un-biased view anyway.
  • illusionado · 1 year ago
it is all about the use i think...^^ if u prefer most viewing sessions then GO for n96 and its about the NAME also^^..

the nokia didnt name nokia n85 as n85 if it can SURPASS n96...hahaha....
  • TaranQ · 1 year ago
better do some research before posting dum comment illusionado!
  • Mat Lampitt · 1 year ago
hey guys im a previous n95 owner and upgraded to a n96 today. iv had the phone approx 9hours and im 100percent taking it back tomorrow. I Am Simply Gob Smacked That Nokia Can Relese Such A Slow Under Powered Phone.
Its Crashed on me countless times today and the flash is pathetic in the dark. the n96 cant even play its own videos back withouth jerky picture or sound. im am deeply dissapointed as i have been waiting for ages for this.
had a play with my mates n82... now thats a flash... jst cant decide between n82 or n85.
  • WALTER · 1 year ago
n96 is fucked up the TV reciever dosn't not work in my country;NIGERIA.i regret buying it......it's too slow for my liking.....
  • Toby · 1 year ago
Doesn't it all come down to money and screensize? Who needs a TV tuner? Who needs 16GB instead of 8GB. I myself do need VoIP, but who buys such an expensive phone without having a contract where VoIP is not really necessary.
So if you want a bigger screen, buy the N96. If you want a smaller phone (incl. screen) and safe some money buy the N85. If you wanna safe more money and care even less about the phone buy the N79. They basically have all the same funtions. So it's just a personal preference. Tho I'd go for the N85.
  • jk · 1 year ago
    hi guys
    can any body post a comparison b/n N 82 & N 85
    thx in advance
  • Clear · 1 year ago
go to Nokia Nseries website. You can do comparison up to 4 cellphones at the same time.
  • TaranQ · 1 year ago
I think I just changed my mind! As I hate companies to drop functionallity on newer models! I think it's real freaking stupid of nokia to drop built-in nokia VOIP support!!!
Why in the hell make a new model that's in the same line and still lacks importand functions (N85 and N96 both have no standard VOIP client)???
I'll keep my E51 for the moment.
  • Farhaan · 1 year ago
I believe that the N85 still has VoIP support, does it not?
  • hardeep singh · 1 year ago
    hey guys
    i got new phone n85 .........
it is best deal to do .......
camera , screen ,music, gps, etc all the things rocks in this ..
    ...
  • TaranQ · 1 year ago
No built in VOIP support on N85! You have to use fring to be able to make VOIP calls. I have both on my E51, native nokia VOIP and fring, but I prefered nokia VOIP as it's much more easy to use (no 3rd party app to start) and call quality is better than with fring.

Btw can anyone confirm tomtom using the built-in gps module (maybe by using the BINPDA patch)??

Hi. I have just got the N96 on 3 for £24 per mth. I have two weeks to decide if I want it. So as yet I haben't put my sim card in and having left the phone on standby yesterday having charged it up all day sunday, I was not impress to find the handset flat when I came home... naughty N96, I fink I will send you back and get your younger fitter brother....
  • David · 1 year ago
Just got the n85. Had n95 8gb previously. Graphically, it's like going from a regular TV to a flat screen HDTV. The colors and contrast are spectacular. the n85 shows details that aren't visible on the n95.
I have three seasons of Justice League Unlimited on my 8gb card as well as 560 songs (around 53 hrs of music) and around 924 pictures. Still have 1.6gb free so memory isn't a problem.
and it's fast. with my n95, if i loaded more than 30 java games, it became sluggish. with the n85, no lag. fastest load time from powered off to accessing memory i've seen.
awesome, awesome phone....except for 2 problems. gps with nokia maps is off. shows my location 50-300 meters off as opposed to google maps which is accurate. hopefully firmware update will correct this.
and, although scrolling through the gallery is much, much faster than on n85. the info on each image doesn't include what album it belongs to. it's a seperate tag, which is kinda annoying.
oh and when music player is on, if usb is connected. it attempts to "refresh" itself which is annoying
  • kc · 1 year ago
Well to each is their own opinion .. some love the n82 and some love and worship the n85: so be it, for whatever the reasons are. However, I have the n96 and before it I had the n95 and I can tell u one thing, this machine is sexy, smooth, better looking, works alot faster, has better quality pictures and videos and is a beautiful piece to have and the envy of the owners of any other phone!! Who cares how it compares to n82 and n85 after all this. You can brag all you want, it's what you want to believe that wins in the end! I chose n96 and I love that toy!! On your end, just enjoy your toys. It's that simple. Thanks you!!!

omg went to the shops to get n96 but now i want the n85 didnt even realise there was a n85!!!!! but it so much better i tried using both and the n96 is slow and when i press the buttons it just basically dont work for me bit more complicated i guesss and the n85 looks better than the n96 but i thought i wont get it just yet thought id do a bit more reasearch on the net b4 i get it haha and i will definately get the n85 now !!!!
  • scream · 1 year ago
n96 dont have a lens cover because it has a kickstand around the camera and only n96 has it
the second think i can say that n96 has the media keys on top and its very useful
but short battery life and lcd screen disadvantages for n96
  • ZX · 12 months ago
i want to add that the prossesor of the n85 arm 11 is twice better than the one in the n96 arm 9 one
  • Leo · 11 months ago
After some reviews & opinions i've read, i surely be going for N85.
I have just one thing in mind: OLED SCREEN's DURABILITY,since my hands get wet more frequently due to sweat.Im thinking how my situation affect OLED's Life, since it isn't water resistant.

i have an N85 ,and it totally rules over N96... its an overall great device in a slim package !
  • Mobiles Marc · 10 months ago
I think that the N85 is going to completely dominate this year. However sony ericsson are given them a good run for their money, while it seems that Samsung have actually been left behind. I actually did my own review of the nokia n85 here: http://www.topmobilephonereviews.co.uk/Nokia-N85

i LOVE this phone. i just have 1 problem. THE WOBBLY slider. I bought mine from a Nokia Store and they had 5 available units at the time and all have wobbly sliders. Mine is the one with least wobbliness. Is there a way i can have that repaired? thanks.

Which is the best? N85 or 5800 express music
  • Pooya · 7 months ago
I prefer n85 too! it has what i want from a mobile! it's LCD is 0.2 inch smaller but it is n't a good reason for me to pay more for n96. N85 's camera has the ability upto 20x digital zoom and macro ability, that 's what you can't see in n96 . . . power, screen and FM transmiter are the other reasons for me to buy a n85 mobile. I know that n95's camera is more powerfull in video mode and it's design looks better and also it is made in finland not china but I prefer n85 . . .
